Red Bull Racing introduced a significant seven-part upgrade package to its RB22 chassis during the Austrian Grand Prix, prompting warnings from rival drivers about the team's restored competitive pace.
The adjustments successfully shed an estimated nine kilograms of excess weight that had hindered the car since the start of the season.
The development allowed Max Verstappen to challenge for the front row before finishing second behind race winner George Russell, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton secured fifth place after an intense early track battle.
The stewards briefly reviewed an incident on lap 11 where Verstappen accused Hamilton of forcing him off the track at Turn 6, but they ultimately decided against a formal investigation.
"That's a penalty," said Verstappen. "Clear penalty."
Verstappen later executed a successful overtake on lap 22 but experienced a sudden drop in rear-end stability during the second half of the race, which prevented him from catching the leader.
"I think what was satisfying is that this was the first time I felt like actually I could fight for the win," said Verstappen.
"I do think that the first half of the race, we were more competitive, because for whatever reason in the second half, something felt off on the rear of the car, where everything was just extremely difficult, from bumps, kerbs, traction, it was just completely gone.
So that's something that we need to understand again, what went wrong there."
"But yes, the first half I felt really good. I mean, I was closing the gap even after the battles that I had with Lewis.
It was cool, but it made us of course lose quite a bit of time."
"So yeah, every time catching up.
But then in the middle of the second stint, something happened with the car on the rear axle, which made me lose pace, and that just stayed there until the end.
So that's a bit of a shame."
"But still, to be that close to a win, I think is a great effort from the team.
They have worked really hard to get these upgrades on the car here, and this is the first time, I think, in the race where I felt really competitive and I could push a bit more.
So that is definitely the positive, I think, of this weekend."
When questioned about the specific technical benefits of the newly modified RB22 aerodynamic package, the Dutch driver noted immediate handling improvements.
"It's a bit more grip. Just goes a bit faster around the corner," added Verstappen.
Hamilton dismissed the complaints regarding his defensive driving maneuvers and stated that the positioning of the cars dictated the racing line.
"Well, he went off on the outside," said Hamilton. "You don't expect to go around the outside of a champion.
I wouldn't expect to go around the outside of him there and hold the line."
"He was behind at the apex and therefore he should have backed out, but he didn't. I left just enough room for him."
The seven-time world champion emphasized that the weight reduction alone accounted for the majority of the performance step seen at the Red Bull Ring.
"They made a huge step this weekend," said Hamilton. "I think they must have brought a three or four tenths [of a second] upgrade.
Three tenths was just from the weight that they dropped from the car, which was huge."
"Considering they've been so close in some of the races like Monaco and they were nine kilos overweight, it's showing that they've got a good car and that they've lost that weight.
And then they brought up lots of upgrades, so they're going to be a force to be reckoned with in the following races."
