The BBC has ended its seasonal wildlife series Winterwatch after 14 years, with the final edition airing in early 2026.
The decision, announced on July 2, 2026, is part of a broader commissioning strategy driven by funding constraints.
The program, which first aired in 2012 to document British wildlife during January and February, will be replaced by a new year-round video podcast called Naturewatch.
The weekly show will launch this autumn on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, and BBC Sounds.
New Format Aims for Year-Round Engagement
Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning for Specialist Factual, said the change is designed to expand the broadcaster's natural history content across multiple digital platforms.
"Nature never stops – and neither should we," Bootle stated.
Naturewatch will provide weekly coverage of seasonal wildlife developments and environmental news across the United Kingdom.
"Every week, Naturewatch will give Springwatch fans – and all wildlife lovers – a new way to stay connected to the natural world," Bootle added.
The BBC emphasized that the new format aims to foster a deeper connection between audiences and local ecosystems throughout all four seasons.
A spokesperson noted that the multi-platform strategy is structured to navigate a competitive media landscape.
"The Watches is a much-loved BBC brand and our newest addition to the family is Naturewatch," the spokesperson said.
"This will allow us to deliver greater value to audiences by connecting them to British wildlife, all year round."
The corporate statement highlighted that the adjustment aligns with efforts to stimulate digital growth and engagement.
"This decision reflects how we are better serving our audience by providing multi-platform content whilst driving digital growth in a competitive media market," the spokesperson added.
Springwatch to Return in 2027
The BBC confirmed that sister program Springwatch will return for a three-week run in May 2027.
The network expressed gratitude to the Winterwatch production team and presenters, who will continue with Springwatch.
"In light of our funding challenges, we are having to make difficult choices and, as such, Winterwatch will unfortunately not continue," the spokesperson said.
Series co-presenter Chris Packham previously highlighted the therapeutic value of live nature broadcasting during national crises.
"People are grieving, struggling and battling with the most tragic situations," Packham said.
"But there is one thing that's happened this year that's offered solace to everyone: the power, the therapy, the existence of the natural world."
Packham also reflected on the spontaneous nature of live television.
"The great joy of our live programmes is that there's always something new and you don't know what it's going to be," he said.
"The team never tires as we keep turning up not knowing what to expect."
The announcement sparked disappointment among viewers on social media and forums. One viewer called it "sad news," while another described the decision as "a dreadful decision."
A third emphasized that the show adhered to the BBC's principles of inform, educate, and entertain.
Many expressed concern that reducing environmental programming could diminish public awareness of conservation.
"The further we drift away from nature, the more we won't care when it's destroyed," a fan said.
On Reddit, users lamented the loss of the winter edition.
One called it "a shame," while another noted it was "more niche than the new life and nature that Springwatch shows us."
A parent shared that the cancellation would disappoint their son, who became obsessed with wildlife through the show.
