Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has dismissed speculation linking Max Verstappen to the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
Speaking during the Austrian Grand Prix, Wolff affirmed his commitment to current drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
According to RacingNews365, Wolff quashed rumors of a driver shakeup after Antonelli extended his contract option following strong performances.
“Yeah, we don't want to change things, and I've also said to George that I think it's a lineup that is good for us,” Wolff said.
The statement comes amid persistent paddock rumors linking Verstappen to alternative destinations like McLaren due to Red Bull's performance inconsistencies since 2024.
“We're very happy with the two of them,” Wolff added.
Hypothetical Trade Scenarios
Despite Wolff locking down his lineup, alternative driver market strategies emerged from external F1 insiders.
As reported by GPFans, a hypothetical multi-driver trade involving Ferrari was debated on the High Performance Racing podcast.
“Kimi Antonelli, Italian driver leading the world championship, could be world champion this season. Out of contract at Mercedes at the end of the season we believe.
Why wouldn't Ferrari go and get him when they can get him? Like, now's the moment,” said podcast host Jake Humphrey.
Former Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer outlined an aggressive financial scenario where Mercedes could leverage Ferrari's desire for a top-tier Italian driver to fund a Verstappen contract.
“What if you sell Kimi to Ferrari and put Max in? You get Max for free,” Szafnauer said.
He added: “You go to Fred and say, ‘Fred, I'll sell you Kimi.’ Give me enough money where Max is now free or Max and George are free.”
Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley initially questioned the feasibility due to Wolff's personal management ties and partial ownership of Mercedes.
“Because his manager also owns a third of Mercedes,” Smedley said.
He later acknowledged that such a deal would only occur if Wolff decided to pursue an undeniable upgrade.
“The only way is if he has a better option and the only better option guaranteed better option right now than the two that he's got is Max,” Smedley concluded.
