ITV has moved England's inaugural Nations Championship rugby opener against South Africa to ITV4, prioritizing a FIFA World Cup round-of-16 match on ITV1.
The England rugby team will face South Africa at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, July 4, 2026, with kickoff at 4:40 p.
m. BST.
ITV1 will air a football match between Canada and Morocco later that evening, leading to the scheduling change.
Broadcasting Decision
The £500 million biennial tournament pits Northern Hemisphere teams against the Southern Hemisphere. ITV secured UK broadcasting rights for the 2026 and 2028 editions.
Wales versus Fiji will air on ITV1 earlier on Saturday afternoon.
However, ITV opted to schedule Tipping Point and news segments ahead of the football coverage rather than the England rugby match.
The South African Rugby Union admitted that the 61,000-capacity Ellis Park stadium is unlikely to sell out, with ticket sales potentially leaving the venue only half-full.
An anonymous source close to the tournament defended the decision, noting that the agreement ensures unprecedented free-to-air access for fans across the UK.
"ITV is arguably the home of sport for fans in the UK this summer, with the Nations Championship joining football World Cup coverage," a source told The Telegraph.
The insider emphasized that the multi-year deal could provide major long-term benefits for the financial growth of the sport.
"For the first time since the game turned professional, fans have unprecedented free-to-air access to international rugby, including every England fixture for the next four years on ITV.
This level of exposure for the sport, and major investment stands to be transformational for rugby," the source added.
An ITV spokesperson expressed satisfaction with their multi-channel weekend lineup.
"We are pleased that ITV is able to offer a weekend of free-to-air coverage of top international live sport across ITV1, ITV4 and ITVX, delivering comprehensive coverage for viewers," the spokesperson said.
On the field, head coach Steve Borthwick's England squad enters the match as underdogs following a challenging Six Nations campaign where they suffered four consecutive defeats.
The English squad will miss influential captain Maro Itoje and injured scrum-half Alex Mitchell, forcing Jack van Poortvliet and Fin Smith into prominent starting roles against the reigning back-to-back world champions.
