Chicago Fire has officially finalized a two-year contract with forward Robert Lewandowski, following his four-year tenure at FC Barcelona.
The club aims to immediately challenge for Major League Soccer trophies.
The 37-year-old Polish striker was secured through a deal entirely funded by owner Joe Mansueto, without external corporate financial partnerships or the yielding of company shares.
The acquisition has driven significant fan engagement, with supporters purchasing Lewandowski shirts at the club shop for $200 despite the high cost.
Massive Signing for the Franchise
"The kids learn about the club's history, and now it will be even more publicized through Robert Lewandowski's contract," said Paweł Szynalik, Chief Financial Officer of Chicago Fire.
Szynalik noted that Mansueto previously spent $65 million to relocate the team to Soldier Field and is privately funding a new $750 million stadium scheduled to open in 2028.
The transfer represents the most significant signing for the franchise since securing Bastian Schweinsteiger, appealing heavily to the massive Polish community residing within Chicago.
"Everything was heading in this direction for several weeks, especially after his visit. He came to Chicago and it seemed the stay was successful.
When he returned to Europe, there was no news that he was choosing another club or that Chicago had messed up," said journalist Joe Chatz in an interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet.
Chatz added that local expectations have shifted toward winning titles immediately, including the MLS playoffs, the Leagues Cup, or the Supporters' Shield.
"Euphoria. Delight.
All at once. This is an event that will be remembered for a long time.
It's the most important transfer since Bastian Schweinsteiger. Chicago has one of the largest Polish communities outside of Poland," Chatz said.
The team currently occupies third place in the Eastern Conference, positioned directly behind Inter Miami, while forward Hugo Cuypers leads the league scoring charts with 13 goals.
Regarding rumors of a $20 million annual salary, Chatz said: "No, I haven't heard such figures. Everything I've heard pointed to lower values."
Strategic Integration and Future Plans
The long-term strategy includes utilizing Lewandowski during the opening of the new venue, though his current contract spans only two seasons.
"It's all Joe Mansueto. There are no other elements.
This is not a complicated or unclear transaction. Apple or any other party is not involved.
The venture is financed by the club and its owner," Chatz said.
Head coach Gregg Berhalter faces the tactical integration of Lewandowski alongside Cuypers, a system variation previously tested in recent league matches.
Management views the veteran forward as the final piece required to elevate the squad, which features Designated Players and Targeted Allocation Money signings like Philip Zinckernagel and Mbokazi.
"Failure to make the playoffs would have been unacceptable even before acquiring Lewandowski. Now expectations are much higher.
The team is set on fighting for trophies here and now," Chatz said.
Lewandowski evaluated the club facilities prior to signing, comparing the Chicago training grounds favorably against elite facilities at his former clubs Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
"When Robert saw the training base two or three weeks ago, he compared it to the best centers in the world.
He said it's one of the best bases he has seen at clubs he played for, whether Bayern or Barcelona," Szynalik said.
The administrative process involved extensive consultations regarding United States taxation laws with the player's legal, financial, and management representatives.
"We are not counting on him being here for the new stadium opening, because he is signing a two-year contract.
We are focusing on what is now. The team is playing much better.
We made the playoffs last season. Coach Gregg Berhalter has improved the team.
Now with Robert, the goal is to win the MLS Cup," Szynalik said.
Simultaneously, public discussions emerged surrounding his wife Anna Lewandowska, who expressed stress regarding the relocation from Barcelona to Chicago via social media.
Public relations specialist Barbara Krysztofczyk addressed the online reaction, dismissing rumors that the statements indicated domestic marital tension.
