The 2026 Wimbledon Championships moved to fourth-round singles action on July 5, 2026, at the All England Club, following a weekend marked by major historical milestones from international wild cards.
Top-seeded players Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, and Novak Djokovic are scheduled for Centre Court appearances as the tournament enters its second week.
Djokovic faces Roman Safiullin, aiming to break Roger Federer's record for the most men's singles match wins at the tournament, while Sabalenka takes on Naomi Osaka.
Historic Saturday
Saturday saw 21-year-old Alexandra Eala of the Philippines defeat defending champion Iga Świątek 7-6(9), 6-2 on Centre Court, marking her deepest Grand Slam run after never advancing past the second round.
"Maybe for someone like Iga who has won so many Slams … or maybe someone like Serena or Venus (Williams) this achievement may seem small, but for someone who grew up in the Philippines …" said Eala, her voice breaking.
The victory sparked massive watch parties in Manila, reflecting her status as a primary sporting figure in her home nation.
Eala, ranked No. 32, attributes her performance to rigorous daily training routines alongside her family.
"I'm very grateful and very welcoming of all the support that I get.
I'm the one and my team is the one and my family is the one who have been putting in the hours.
We're the ones who are here at the courts 12 hours in a row," Eala stated.
She emphasized that her heavy training schedule maintains her focus amidst the growing public platform.
Eala expressed hope that her career serves as an inspiration for others to forge unique athletic careers.
"I try to be as authentic as I can. I believe in being genuine.
I believe in my values. This exposure, I guess, or this platform that I have has really allowed me to self-reflect.
It allows me to become the best version of myself, because I know that a lot of people look up to me," Eala added.
She will next compete against 2024 finalist Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round on Monday.
"Then again, I think the main message here is that I don't want them to look at me and say, 'I want to be the next Alex Eala.'
I want them to look at me and say, 'Wow, I want to be the first me. I want to make my own path,'" Eala concluded.
Simultaneously, British wild card Arthur Fery secured a fourth-round position by defeating Zizou Bergs in a four-hour and 38-minute match on Court 18, overcoming persistent nosebleeds that required medical attention three times.
"I was just trying to back my fighting spirit," said Fery, who became the first British wild card to reach the Wimbledon fourth round since 1993.
Fery fought back from being 4-1 down in both the fourth and fifth sets to win 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10/5).
In other upcoming matches, Americans Jessica Pegula and Iva Jovic are scheduled to play on Court 1.
