US-based technology company Equinix has obtained official approval to construct a massive new data center in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, according to Het Parool.
The American firm already operates nine data centers around the Dutch capital. The newly approved facility is projected to eventually become the largest data center in existence.
However, the project has drawn criticism because data centers place an immense burden on the local power grid, which is already under severe strain in the Amsterdam region.
The upcoming facility is estimated to consume approximately 779 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
That nearly rivals the 869 million kilowatt-hours consumed annually by all Amsterdam households combined in 2024.
