Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned his Clacton parliamentary seat on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, triggering a by-election amid intense scrutiny over undeclared financial donations.

The move prompted major political parties to boycott the upcoming vote, leaving satirical candidate Count Binface as one of his primary challengers.

Investigation and Resignation

The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is currently investigating Farage over a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne and separate support from convicted fraudster George Cottrell.

Farage insisted he has "done nothing wrong" and argued the investigation is an establishment tool.

"This will be a people versus the establishment by-election," he said. "It's a chance to stick two fingers up at the entire establishment."

He maintained that the multi-million dollar funds were essential to secure lifelong private protection due to high security threats.

"I will fight to win. I will fight to continue the political revolution that Reform has started," he added.

The independent investigation into the £5 million gift remains suspended due to his resignation but will automatically resume if Farage regains his seat.

Political Reactions

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the resignation as a "desperate stunt."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said her party will not stand a candidate in the "fake by-election."

"We need to let that investigation run its course, and I think the reason why Nigel Farage has resigned is because he's terrified that he's going to be found to have done something wrong," she said.

Rupert Lowe, leader of Restore Britain, called the move a "Reform-sponsored media circus" designed to deflect from questions about concealed financial donations.

Labour Party officials urged Farage to face the probe rather than staging an electoral distraction.

"Nigel Farage is engulfed in a sleaze scandal and he's desperately trying to change the subject," a Labour spokesman said.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey and Green Party leader Zack Polanski also urged a total boycott.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the by-election disrespects Clacton residents to serve a personal political tantrum.

"This is a stunt that is all about his own interest. It's not about the people of Clacton," she said.

Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis added that the resignation was a direct effort to outrun financial scrutiny.

"I think he senses that he is in real trouble and has taken action to try and get in front of that," he said.

Count Binface, a serial election candidate, welcomed the contest with a simple message: "Game on, Nige."
