A group of modders has released an unofficial fan remaster of Borderlands Online, making the canceled online shooter playable in English 11 years after 2K shelved it.
The revived project, known as BLOL, arrived on October 5, 2026, and is free to play.
Borderlands Online was originally developed in China by Shanda Games with 2K China as a free-to-play title.
It was scrapped in 2015 when 2K closed its Chinese studio, citing concerns over return on investment.
The game remained unreleased lost media until modder and dataminer EpicNNG obtained a surviving build and launched a community preservation initiative in May 2025.
Modern upgrades and full English localization
The fan release includes 4K resolution support, 120 frames per second, an unlocked field of view, redesigned user interface assets, and full English localization.
It supports both online multiplayer and offline local play.
Project lead EpicNNG described the effort as a mission to recover a Borderlands game thought to be lost forever.
"Despite all the obstacles, potential legal issues, and constant setbacks… we managed to do it," EpicNNG said in the release announcement.
The team redid all visual assets for the translated English text, reconstructed HUD elements, and engineered workarounds to bypass the original authentication login screens.
They confirmed no generative artificial intelligence was used and chose an early release to protect their manual coding work.
Despite warnings about server bugs, broken player skills, and potential outages, the launch recorded 1,000 player account creations within its first four hours.
The team said intellectual property owner Take-Two Interactive has not issued legal demands over the non-commercial preservation release.
Modders plan to comply immediately if a cease and desist notice is served.
