Counter-terrorism investigators are examining whether political motivations or specific ideological animosity drove the killing of former politician Ann Widdecombe, according to The Guardian.
Detectives are exploring whether extreme hostility toward the Reform UK party or hatred directed at Widdecombe's strong personal perspectives contributed to the incident.
The investigation was officially transferred on Monday to Counter-Terrorism Policing from Devon and Cornwall Police, resulting in the suspect being rearrested under terrorism statutes.
Authorities initiated the transfer after executing searches at the suspect's property, which uncovered details prompting specialists to investigate political motivations further.
Officials announced on Tuesday that the targeted attack resulted in the death of the 78-year-old political figure at her residence near Haytor Vale, Dartmoor.
Inquiries are currently assessing the potential involvement of leftwing, anarchist, and single-issue terrorism, though specialists emphasize that the investigation remains in its infancy.
The background of the individual in custody, including aspects of mental health and neurodivergence, is also undergoing thorough examination by the police force.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor stated during a press briefing that the current focus is centered on clarifying the preparation and underlying motivations.
"We are working to understand the planning and preparation and the motivation that sits behind the attack," Taylor said.
Taylor refrained from confirming whether the incident constituted an explicit assault on Reform UK, adding that no possibilities are currently being dismissed.
When questioned about potential threats to other individuals associated with the political party, Taylor provided further context on safety measures.
"That will form a line of investigation to ensure that we are putting all appropriate measures in place to mitigate any threat, should it become apparent.
I'm not saying there is or there isn't at this stage," he said.
He also confirmed that legal authorization has granted investigators seven additional days to conduct interviews with the individual in custody.
"We are working through what the motivation for the attack currently is," he said.
A 28-year-old male residing in Rotherham was taken into custody on Saturday following the discovery of the former Conservative minister and Reform spokesperson.
Investigators are analyzing whether a recent television appearance on Talk TV could have influenced the timing of the assault, which occurred around midday on Wednesday.
Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez defended the local force against public scrutiny regarding the timeline of the investigation.
"It is not unusual that in a fast-paced investigation, more information comes to light that changes the nature or the character of what the police are dealing with.
I am confident that Devon and Cornwall police has provided a substantial and professional response to Ann Widdecombe's death," Hernandez said.
Evidence suggests the lone suspect traveled approximately 270 miles from South Yorkshire to Devon to execute the assault before returning to Rotherham.
Local police forces indicated the suspect had no prior history with South Yorkshire Police and had not been flagged by the national Prevent counter-terror strategy.
The case continues to be treated as a potential counter-terrorism matter, though a formal designation as a terrorist attack remains subject to final national coordination approval.
