British counterterrorism police have taken the lead in investigating the arrest of several men detained near RAF Fairford on Sunday on suspicion of explosives offenses.
The arrests triggered residential evacuations and military bomb-disposal deployments, according to authorities.
Gloucestershire Police declared a major incident in the nearby village of Whelford, located about two miles from the strategic airfield.
Military explosive ordnance disposal teams were dispatched to inspect several vehicles seized at the scene.
Aerial footage showed a bomb disposal robot examining three white vans with open rear doors and scattered items.
While authorities established a safety cordon, police emphasized that the threat appeared to be contained.
RAF Fairford serves as a primary European hub for the U. S.
Air Force, housing the 501st Combat Support Wing and hosting heavy bombers utilized in recent operational strikes against Iranian missile sites.
Resident Julian Tudsbery reported that local authorities instructed villagers to evacuate their homes in the early morning following reports of suspicious vehicles parked in the area.
Emergency protocols directed displaced residents to a nearby leisure center while specialist teams secured the perimeter and examined the seized vehicles.
Officials noted that national security cases involving hostile state activities have risen significantly over recent months, heightening security awareness across critical defense infrastructure in the region.

Military representatives emphasized that risk levels are continually evaluated to adapt protective protocols for personnel, base operations, and surrounding residential communities.
