Devon and Cornwall Police arrested a 28-year-old white British national in South Yorkshire on Saturday evening, July 11, 2026, on suspicion of murdering former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe.
Counter-terrorism officers assisted in the operation, though authorities are not treating the incident as terrorism.
Discovery and Timeline
The 78-year-old former politician was discovered dead on Thursday, July 9, at her secluded bungalow in Dartmoor, Devon, where she lived alone.
Investigators believe Widdecombe was attacked and killed roughly 24 hours prior, around midday on Wednesday, potentially after disturbing an intruder.
A 26-year-old man previously arrested on Friday has been released and is no longer part of the investigation.
Police are currently focusing on a dark VW Golf Mk4 reported to be parked suspiciously near Widdecombe's property on Wednesday morning.
Witness Accounts
An anonymous garage worker in Haytor recalled seeing the vehicle. "At around 9am I went to go and put the car in a lay-by.
[The Golf] was at the top of the lane near Ann's place," he said.
The employee noted that the driver appeared out of place for the quiet area. "He was doing up his walking boots.
He was in his late 20s, maybe early 30s. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt," the worker added.
"It didn't look like he fitted in. You don't see many late 20s, early 30s men around here.
He was heading up in that direction [of Ann's house]," the garage employee stated.
Reform leader Nigel Farage visited the scene on Saturday, where he laid flowers and shared a theory he had discussed with the Prime Minister regarding a botched burglary, while suggesting the crime appeared premeditated.
"One theory doing the rounds, I discussed this with the Prime Minister yesterday, is that it was a burglary that went wrong.
But the car went onto the drive at approximately 12.25pm/12.30pm on Wednesday," said Farage.
Farage pointed to Widdecombe's broadcasting schedule that day to question the likelihood of an ordinary burglary.
"She'd done one interview in the morning… and she was due to do another one at 1pm.
So if you were a burglar, would you literally drive your car onto someone's drive? You wouldn't," Farage stated.
He concluded by expressing his view on the nature of the attack while advising against further political speculation.
"From what I can see of it, from what I can make out, this was premeditated murder.
Whether it was politically motivated, whether it was somebody with a grudge, I don't think it pays at this moment in time to speculate," Farage asserted.
Media logs show Widdecombe appeared on Talk TV on Wednesday morning. At 12:19 p.

m. and missed her scheduled 2:15 p.
m. appearance on Matt Allwright's program.
Local contractor Peter Cornthwaite noted that the property lacked significant security measures. "She didn't have a secure garden, no gate or anything," said Cornthwaite.
Cornthwaite emphasized the historical tranquility of the neighborhood. "It's very quiet round here.
We leave our doors and windows unlocked.
After renaming the house after herself, anyone who wanted to find her would have been able to," Cornthwaite added.
An elderly neighbor expressed the collective shock of the community to The Telegraph. "We are all shocked," said an anonymous female resident in her 90s.
The resident noted that the area lacked any recent history of serious crime. "Murders happen to other people, they don't happen in your own neighbourhood," the neighbor added.
Another neighbor lamented the loss, stating, "She gave her life to public service, it is a tragedy for it to have happened."
Police have urged the public to refrain from speculation as lines of enquiry are actively pursued.
