Senator John Fetterman has stated he would consider leaving the Democratic Party if it ever becomes "the anti-Israel party."
The Pennsylvania lawmaker made the remarks during a media event, as reported by The Guardian on Wednesday.
His comments come after 103 House Democrats supported a failed bid to halt billions in military assistance to Israel.
Fetterman has positioned himself as a leading congressional defender of Israel, even as other party members distance themselves from traditional support amid the Gaza and Lebanon conflicts.
"My long-term concern has been with the Democratic party, as I am a member of that, is that our party is going to back away and turn their back to Israel," Fetterman said.
He noted recent primary victories by candidates opposed to providing aid to Israel while explaining his conditions for potentially leaving the party.
"I've described that if our party ever becomes … the anti-Israel party, you know, that's when I would leave," Fetterman added.
He emphasized that the issue represents a point of deep personal conviction for him.
"That's been a moral clarity for me," Fetterman said.
The senator acknowledged that Republicans have tried to persuade him to switch affiliations, but he has no interest due to policy disagreements with the GOP.
"I've been very clear. I am never changing my party, except for that one condition that we just discussed," Fetterman said.
He maintained that if he intended to change parties, he would have already done so.
The political friction peaked the same afternoon as House lawmakers voted on a $3.3 billion aid package for Israel.
While the measure passed, the opposing votes from over 100 Democrats signaled a growing shift in the party's foreign policy consensus.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "The American people are rightly demanding an end to a perpetual cycle of war, and the Netanyahu government cannot maintain its current course."
The legislative tension follows separate efforts in April by independent Senator Bernie Sanders to block specific military sales to Israel.
A majority of Democratic senators supported those measures, though Fetterman rejected both attempts.
