Irish soccer officials abruptly ended a pre-match news conference in Backa Topola, Serbia, after heated political exchanges ahead of Ireland's match against Israel.

The incident occurred when a journalist questioned head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson about ideological support for violence following an incident on a Flydubai flight.

An Irish press officer intervened to redirect the focus back to sports, saying, "We are not doing any questions like this today.

We are doing football questions."

A subsequent question accused Irish players of making racist remarks toward Israeli opponents during their previous match on Tuesday.

An official from the Football Association of Ireland interrupted and dismissed the claim as "completely untrue," prompting an outcry as the press conference came to an abrupt close.

Tensions have escalated following Ireland's 3-0 victory over Israel in Hungary, where Irish players abstained from handshakes and lowered their heads during the Israeli national anthem.

Security concerns prompted the FAI to refuse hosting the return leg in Dublin, moving the fixture to Serbia.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the gestures, accusing Dublin of placing itself on the wrong side of history.

Addressing the political strain surrounding the squad, Hallgrimsson emphasized unity and internal focus despite external pressure.

"Surviving this, coming out of it together as one would be a massive win for me. That is coming from my heart," Hallgrimsson said.

"All the challenges that this team has gone through, all the criticism.

Just surviving as a group after this game, that would be a big win for me and for this group, for the association."

"There’s been a lot of emotions from the people in Ireland about this, and obviously that affects the players as well."

Hallgrimsson highlighted efforts to keep the squad grounded despite the surrounding noise.

"We want to do good, but it’s always going to be a challenge when the environment is as noisy as it is.

So we try to focus on the football side, and we’ve done a lot of things to help in that area."

To manage high-pressure environments, the team adopted pre-game rituals led by player Conor Coventry.

"One change that we’ve done in the last games is before we go on to the pitch, we do a little prayer and a huddle with the players and all the staff, just to cool our heads before we go on to the pitch."

"Conor Coventry has taken that part, so he is now called Brother Coventry in the squad.

But it’s really good when you go into a high-intensity and big-pressure game like we’ve been doing, to start the game with cool heads."
