The Portuguese Football Federation officially introduced Jorge Jesus as the new head coach of the Portugal national team on Friday, July 17, 2026, replacing Roberto Martínez.
The 71-year-old manager signed a four-year contract extending through the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup, accepting a lower salary than his previous package at Al-Nassr to prioritize leading his home nation.
Ambitious Vision for Portugal
Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença outlined a highly ambitious future for the national squad during the introductory press conference.
"Não temos medo de assumir que queremos ser a melhor seleção do mundo," stated Proença.
He emphasized that the federation entered a new era focused on victory, leadership, and maximizing the potential of Portuguese talent across upcoming tournaments including the Nations League, the Euros, and the World Cup.
Following his introduction, Jorge Jesus addressed his vision and objectives for managing the national squad.
"Quero agradecer a oportunidade de treinar uma das melhores seleções do mundo ao Presidente e a todos os presentes aqui.
A minha apresentação é formal, é óbvio.
O que querem é fazer-me perguntas, mas o slogan aqui atrás diz tudo 'nós viemos para ganhar'," said Jesus.
"Com estas condições de trabalho e qualidade de trabalho, nós temos uma seleção para acreditar e valorizar o espetáculo, os jogadores e a nossa seleção.

Jesus dismissed the notion that managing a national team requires fundamentally different methodologies compared to club football, asserting his readiness for the job.
Relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo
Regarding Cristiano Ronaldo, Jesus stated: "Ainda não falei com o Cristiano. Ele nunca vai ser um problema para a seleção, nem para mim.
O que ele é como jogador e a polémica que houve à volta dele, cada um pensa como quiser."
"Quando tiver de tomar alguma decisão, vou falar com ele, mas não só com ele, mas com todos individualmente.
Ele é um símbolo do futebol português, da seleção, de Portugal. Isso vai ficar sempre na história," he explained.
Jesus noted that 12 of the 26 players in the national squad have previously worked under his leadership, expressing confidence in the squad's average age of 28.
He also named Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Rúben Dias, and Diogo Costa as the five squad captains, moving away from relying purely on senior tenure.
Portugal is scheduled to play its first match under the leadership of Jorge Jesus against Wales on September 24.
