The Social Security Administration is distributing the third and final round of July 2026 monthly benefit payments on Wednesday, July 22.
The distribution targets beneficiaries across the United States whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st of any month.
According to the Social Security Administration, the agency serves more than 75 million beneficiaries nationwide across retirement, disability, and survivor programs.
Under the standard payment schedule, distributions are issued on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month based on birth dates.
Recipients born between the 1st and 10th received payments on July 8, while those born between the 11th and 20th were paid on July 15.
Beneficiaries who began receiving benefits prior to May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income were paid on July 2.
Average monthly retirement benefits stood at approximately $1,937 in June 2026, according to agency data.
Disability benefits average $1,496.16 monthly, while survivor benefits average $1,631.39.
Maximum retirement benefits reach $5,181 per month in 2026 for workers who delay claiming until age 70.
Individuals claiming at full retirement age receive up to $4,152 monthly, while those claiming at age 62 receive a maximum of $2,969.
To qualify for the maximum payout, workers must earn at or above the taxable wage cap for at least 35 years.
The agency estimates that only 1 to 2 percent of beneficiaries meet the criteria for the maximum payment level.
Federal law mandates that benefits be delivered electronically via direct deposit into bank accounts or loaded onto Direct Express Debit Mastercard cards.
Paper check recipients represent a small minority of overall beneficiaries.
Operations at field offices face challenges due to staffing reductions and system modernization needs, raising potential service delay concerns for new applicants.
Applicants are advised to submit filings up to four months before their intended benefit start date.
Operational constraints continue to impact service delivery timetables at local branch locations, according to official reports.
"[The agency is] struggling right now to keep pace with the timeliness this year," reported an unnamed official during an SSA operations meeting in April.
Former agency officials also expressed concerns regarding the ongoing capacity of backend infrastructure to handle beneficiary inquiries efficiently.
"With SSA staff being reduced while the agency was already operating at insufficient support levels and computer systems in need of modernization, continued service delays, and breakdowns are likely," warned Jason Fichtner, executive director of the Retirement Income Institute.
The agency advises beneficiaries to wait three business days after their scheduled payment date before reporting a missing distribution.
Recipients can check payment status or update bank information through their online accounts or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
The next round of birth-date-based benefit checks is scheduled for distribution in August 2026.
