Veterinarians and specialists at the Ojai Raptor Center are treating Jackie, the famous 14-year-old bald eagle from Big Bear Lake, for severe anemia and kidney inflammation.
The eagle was rescued after an altercation with two subadult eagles on July 23, 2026.
Testing confirmed that Jackie does not have lead poisoning, cancer, or ingested metallic objects like fishing hooks.
Specialists are still evaluating potential zinc toxicity alongside treatments for rodenticide exposure.
Jackie underwent a critical blood transfusion from another eagle on July 20, which improved her energy levels.
Medical experts emphasize that her condition remains guarded while she undergoes further diagnostic evaluation 170 miles away from her nest.
Hospital and rehabilitation manager for the Ojai Raptor Center Eliza Cameron provided an official update on the eagle's complex medical status.
"Her condition remains critical at this time," said Cameron.
Medical teams continue to consult external experts to address the root cause of the bird's underlying condition while administering supportive therapies.
"This is not a straightforward case so we're consulting with several specialists," said Cameron.
"A treatment plan has been developed to ensure we are covering all bases while we work to determine the cause of anemia."
The center outlined the uncertain nature of wildlife medicine as diagnostic efforts persist.
"While we are encouraged by the dedication and collaboration surrounding this case, it is still too early to predict the outcome," said the center.
"We know many of you are hoping for more answers, and so are we. Wildlife medicine often requires patience, and some answers simply take time."
Friends of Big Bear Valley, the organization operating the camera that has livestreamed Jackie's nest since 2015, issued a statement regarding her ongoing recovery process.
"She is still in guarded condition and can turn in a moment," said the group.
"Please keep Jackie and the rest of her family in your thoughts, sending positive energy and prayers."
Followers of the livestream expressed mixed reactions to the medical updates online.
"I am prepared for a sad outcome," said Rebecca McNabb, a follower from Hickory, North Carolina.
"I know whatever happens, she is in the hands of a medical team who will do their (darnedest) to save her."
Other followers questioned the long-term prognosis for the raptor's eventual return to the wild.
"Will there ever come a time when her rehabilitation reaches a point to where they can do no more, and release her even though she is not 100% and let nature take its course?"
said a fan.
Some viewers maintained an optimistic outlook on the eagle's recovery prospects.
"She is a spicy girl and no doubt has the resilience to beat this!" said Dee Michele.
Supporters also extended well wishes to the remaining eagle family at the nest site.
"Keeping Jackie and the eagle medical team as well as Shadow and eaglets in my prayers," said Bonnie Brock, a supporter from Pensacola, Florida.
"Hopefully for miraculous healing for Jackie, and a happy reunion with Shadow, Sandy and Luna."
At Big Bear Lake, Jackie's mate Shadow continues to defend the nest alongside their offspring, Sandy and Luna, providing fish for the fledglings as the medical evaluation continues.
