Firefighters in West Sussex responded to a vehicle fire on the A27 between Boxgrove and Fontwell on Sunday, July 26, leading to temporary road closures and significant traffic delays.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene after reports came in around 2 p. m.
AA Traffic News stated that authorities closed the roadway from the Tangmere roundabout to the Fontwell Services roundabout.
Traffic updates and images from Tangmere Village showed long vehicle queues approaching Fontwell, and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes.
Three fire engines were deployed to manage the blaze, according to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
“We were called at 14:30 to reports of a vehicle fire on the A27 between Boxgrove and Fontwell,” a spokesperson for the service said.
Emergency crews brought the flames under control without reporting any injuries.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised three fire engines to the scene,” the spokesperson added.
Crews finished their operations and left the location within an hour.
“The fire was brought under control with no casualties and crews left the scene at 15:30,” the spokesperson said.
Weekend of Road Disruptions
The Sunday incident followed a series of road disruptions across Sussex on Saturday, July 25.
Police arrested a Lewes man after emergency services discovered a burning car in the early hours near HMP Lewes.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to that incident at 4:45 a. m.
on Neville Road at the junction with Brighton Road.
The fire forced the closure of A277 Western Road from Warren Drive to Winterbourne Hollow, with police maintaining barriers around a severely damaged vehicle at the prison crossroads through late morning.
Later that same morning at around 9:30 a. m.
, a separate crash partially blocked the A27 westbound after Carden Avenue near Brighton.
“Partially blocked and queueing traffic due to crash on A27 westbound after Carden Avenue (Hollingbury / Ditchling junction),” an AA Traffic News report read.
The collision caused traffic speeds to drop significantly along the busy route.
“Delays of nine minutes and delays increasing on A27 westbound between A270 Lewes Road (Stanmer Park) and A23 London Road.
Average speed ten mph,” the report read.
