North Queensland Cowboys captain Tom Dearden is at the centre of ongoing speculation regarding a possible early departure from the NRL club, with personal factors driving rumours of a move to a Sydney-based franchise.
Despite signing a long-term extension that ties him to the Cowboys through 2028 or 2029, talk about his future has intensified.
The playmaker currently earns approximately $750,000 annually, well below his market value as a marquee halfback.
Family Circumstances Fuel Rumours
Journalist Brent Read discussed the situation on Fox Sports' NRL 360, highlighting the role of Dearden's family circumstances.
"These rumours have been around since the pre-season. Tommy's got a partner who lives in Sydney.
She's now pregnant," Read said.
Read noted that while his partner plans to relocate to Townsville temporarily, speculation persists over whether the couple will permanently settle in North Queensland.
"She's from and lives in Sydney, but I believe she's moving up there now since she's pregnant and there's been some talk that there's been some interest (in Tommy) and Tommy leaving the Cowboys," he added.
North Queensland management has consistently dismissed claims that their star playmaker will be granted a release before his contract expires.
"The Cowboys have denied this several times.
There were rumours that his management met the club to talk about potentially leaving if his partner can't settle into Townsville," Read said.
Read explained that discussions have taken place, but the club maintains a firm stance against a release.
"My understanding is that it's been spoken about (but) the club has denied that it's going to happen or that it will happen."
Multiple Factors at Play
The potential move involves several variables, including how the family adapts to life in Townsville and financial considerations.
"There's a couple of factors to play. One, it's going to depend on how his partner settles into Townsville.
The other is that he is on so much money (at the moment)," Read said.
NRL analyst Gorden Tallis offered a different perspective, emphasising that the decision may be driven by personal rather than professional reasons.
"I don't think it's a decision for footy. I think it's a decision for a relationship and his partner," Tallis said.
Tallis stressed that the Queensland Maroons representative is the centrepiece of the Cowboys franchise.
"This is going to be difficult territory, but she's got to support him through his contract."
He added that Townsville is an ideal environment for raising a family while pursuing a rugby league career.
"They can live for 50 years in whatever suburb.
This is his time to shine and in North Queensland it's not a bad place to bring up kids.
It's beautiful."
Tallis concluded by noting the strong regional support Dearden receives. "He's the marquee player there.
You can always fly home to see your family. It's a passionate region."
Host Braith Anasta weighed in on the interest Dearden would attract if he became available. "Dearden would have every club in Sydney (after him)," Anasta said.
Any potential departure would significantly impact North Queensland's roster depth, especially after Scott Drinkwater's agreed move to the St George Illawarra Dragons next season.
While Jake Clifford and Jaxon Purdue remain under contract, the loss of Tom Duffy to the Brisbane Broncos earlier this year has already thinned the club's playmaking options.
