A Canadian Kia EV9 owner was shocked to receive a CAD$22,308 (about $16,000) bill for a charging session that should have cost less than $3.
The invoice, posted on Reddit by user IntelliDev, shows the charging session began on May 17, 2025, but wasn't closed until August 25, 2026.
According to the bill, only 4.91 kWh was added, which would normally cost under $3 at public charging rates.
Timing Glitch Causes Massive Overcharge
The invoice notes that the session 'took place in the past on a terminal that was out of communication.'
This suggests the charging stopped long ago, but the network never received the signal to end the session.
Because the charger billed by time, the meter kept running for over 15 months.
At roughly CAD$2 per hour, the elapsed time between the start and end dates matches the enormous total.
Another glitch: the invoice lists the session duration as only seven days, 18 hours, 12 minutes, and 40 seconds, omitting the preceding year and three months.
IntelliDev said he emailed Hypercharge Networks to dispute the bill but had not received a response at the time of his update.
The company has not publicly explained the incident.
