Feyenoord has responded to AS Roma's transfer proposal for Givairo Read with a counteroffer.
The Dutch club submitted its terms on Friday after rejecting the initial package from the Serie A side.
Roma had offered a deal worth up to 25 million euros for the 20-year-old right-back.
However, Feyenoord refused to accept that amount as a fixed fee, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Eredivisie champions instead outlined alternative payment installments, performance bonuses, and structural terms to complete the transfer.
Roma Emerges as Frontrunner
Negotiations between Feyenoord and Nottingham Forest stalled over several obstacles in recent days, positioning Roma as the leading contender for Read's signature.
A delegation from the Italian club is prepared to travel to Rotterdam to finalize the agreement.
Read has already spoken with manager Gian Piero Gasperini and agreed to a potential salary of four million euros per season.
In an interview with Voetbal International, Read shared his thoughts on the ongoing speculation.
"Of course I find it quite exciting," said Read. "But I cannot look into the future.
I do not know myself what is going to happen."
"In fact, I do not even think I know everything that is currently playing out, and that is deliberate.
My agents keep a lot away from me so that I can keep my head on football and focus fully on becoming top fit and getting into shape for the new season," he added.
Read expressed readiness for a move abroad if the right opportunity arises.
"If the opportunity comes at a club I see as a fit, then I am ready for it.
It is unexplainable, it is a feeling. I feel it," said Read.
"You must always have confidence in yourself. I am fit again now, physically and mentally I feel strong.
The next step is showing it on the pitch," he added.
The defender emphasized that his goal for the season is to stay fit and perform well, having experienced setbacks before.
"I have experienced how quickly things can go wrong in football.
You think you are back from an injury and then you have to take a step back again," Read said.
Despite the transfer interest, Read clarified he is not forcing an exit from Feyenoord.
"That I will never say," said Read. "It is not like I think: I must leave now, because I have learned everything here.
Certainly not."
"I still have so much to learn and I just turned twenty years old.
But what I do say is that if the opportunity for a transfer arises, I want to think about it.
You never know how many chances you get in life," he added.
If a move does not materialize, Read is committed to staying and competing for the championship, with an eye on the Dutch national team.
