US President Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping that any Chinese support for Iran was "totally unacceptable," according to US Ambassador to China David Perdue.
Perdue said in a CNBC interview on Friday that Trump had clearly communicated the message to China weeks earlier.
He said any assistance to Iran, whether direct or indirect, including intelligence, parts, or military equipment, was unacceptable, and that Trump reiterated the stance during their recent talks.
Candid Talks on Difficult Issues
Perdue described the discussions between the two leaders as candid and increasingly intimate about difficult topics.
He said the two have been building a relationship based on some trust while addressing challenging issues.
Xi's three-day visit, at Trump's invitation, aimed to maintain stability in relations between the world's two largest economies.
During a 90-minute closed-door meeting on Thursday, they discussed critical issues including the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula, according to China's official statement.
No significant breakthroughs were reported on trade or artificial intelligence, but Trump praised the meeting as "productive" in a social media post.
He also mentioned agreement on renaming Artificial Intelligence as "SUPER INTELLIGENCE," highlighting its importance.
Trump hosted Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan at a black-tie state dinner attended by leading US technology executives and business leaders.
Earlier, Trump gave Xi a tour of the White House, including the Oval Office, presidential portraits gallery, helicopter landing pad, and a ballroom under construction.
Meanwhile, Melania Trump and Peng visited the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art separately.
On Friday, Trump planned to take Xi to the National Archives, where foundational US documents are preserved, coinciding with the US's 250th anniversary and China's Mid-Autumn Festival, a major family holiday.
