Director Takashi Yamazaki premiered his new monster film Godzilla Minus Zero at the New York Film Festival on September 27, 2026.
The film is Toho's follow-up to its 2023 Academy Award-winning predecessor Godzilla Minus One.
Set in 1949, two years after the events of the previous movie, the story follows former military pilot Kōichi Shikishima and his wife Noriko as Japan faces a new dragon-like monster threat dubbed Ghidorah.
Cast and Creative Team Return
Writer, director, and visual effects supervisor Yamazaki returns, reuniting key cast members.
Ryunosuke Kamiki plays Kōichi, Minami Hamabe plays Noriko, and Hidetaka Yoshioka plays disaster-response officer Kenji Noda.
Meteorologist Makoto Aoyama, played by Masami Nagasawa, joins the team to introduce less artillery-heavy defense mechanisms against the looming creature.
Scientist Kanji Murakami, portrayed by Min Tanaka, provides crucial research required to battle the monsters.
The film features scenes of devastation and dragon-like lightning attacks, along with a sequence involving Godzilla and the Statue of Liberty.
It explores questions of sacrifice, trauma, and human attempts to exercise control over destructive natural forces in post-war Japan.
Following its festival premiere, Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to open in commercial theaters across Japan on November 3, 2026.
Its North American theatrical release follows on November 6, 2026.
