A Kentucky State Police trooper was shot and killed Monday during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Warren County near Bowling Green.
The fallen officer was identified as 30-year-old Trooper Hayden Phillips, who was assigned to KSP Post 3 Bowling Green.
Authorities said Phillips was shot after pulling over a vehicle while patrolling the highway.
A statewide Blue Alert was issued until the suspect, 51-year-old Emonnie Branch, was taken into custody by Louisville Metro Police.
Branch has been charged with the murder of a first responder or peace officer.
KSP Post 3 Bowling Green is leading the ongoing investigation.
Leaders Mourn Trooper Phillips
KSP Colonel Phillip Burnett Jr. said Phillips was a graduate of Cadet Class 103 and praised his dedication to duty and the commonwealth.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear asked residents to pray for Phillips' family, describing him as a devoted husband and loving father to three children.
Attorney General Russell Coleman said detectives from his office were on the scene and would continue to support KSP colleagues.
The Indiana State Police also publicly shared condolences for Phillips' family, friends, and colleagues.
Investigators urge anyone with information about the incident to contact 911 immediately.
