A 45-year-old St. Louis man has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for fraudulently purchasing five vehicles using stolen personal information and fake identification documents.
Michael Calvin obtained victims' personal data from the dark web and created fake Missouri driver's licenses based on a template found online, according to an investigation by the US Secret Service and police departments in Missouri, Ohio, and elsewhere.
Between November 1, 2023, and August 31, 2024, Calvin used the fraudulent documents to buy five cars across several states, totaling $333,000.
The purchases included a Chevrolet Camaro for $45,122 in Iowa, a Jeep Cherokee for $43,967 in Wisconsin, a Dodge Charger Hellcat for $90,785 in Tennessee, a Chevrolet Corvette for $61,175 in Oklahoma, and a Dodge Durango for $92,921 in Wisconsin.
Court documents reveal that Calvin attempted to sell the Durango on August 13 in St. Louis but was shot during the attempt.
US District Judge Stephen R. Clark handed down the sentence last week and ordered Calvin to pay $193,000 in restitution.
Some of the vehicles have been recovered, while others remain missing, though it is unclear which ones are still unaccounted for.
