The Cook Islands men's national football team hosted Tahiti in an international friendly on September 26, 2026, in Rarotonga.

It was the nation's first senior men's home match on domestic soil in 28 years.

Tahiti won the historic opening fixture 3-1, despite an early energetic push by the home side.

Maitere Tanerii scored back-to-back goals in the 6th and 8th minutes to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

Honoura Maraetefau added a third strike in the 63rd minute.

Cook Islands captain Kerim Kumsuz scored a late goal on his international debut to narrow the final margin.

A second friendly between the two Pacific rivals took place on September 30 at the Cook Islands Football Association Academy in Matavera.

The match featured a dynamic opening half, with the Cook Islands taking an early 2-0 lead before Tahiti leveled at 2-2.

The Cook Islands regained a 3-2 advantage shortly after halftime.

Decades of Absence and a Path Forward

The return to home soil addresses a decades-long absence driven by geographic and financial constraints.

The Cook Islands consists of 15 islands spread across 2.2 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean.

Because many national squad members reside in New Zealand and Australia, assembling the team incurs significant travel costs.

Even nearest neighbor Tahiti lies over 1,000 kilometers away.

Regional competition structures by the Oceania Football Confederation previously centralized qualifying rounds in single host countries to manage expenses.

Consequently, the Cook Islands played their 2026 World Cup qualifying opening rounds in Samoa and their 2024 Nations Cup qualifiers in Tonga.

To support continuous development, the Cook Islands Football Association appointed New Zealand-born coach Rhys Ruka through 2028.

The program aims to prepare the squad for hosting Nations Cup qualifying matches in Rarotonga in 2027.

"To get better, we need to spend more time together and play more games," said Rhys Ruka, Head Coach of the Cook Islands men's national team.

The recent matches also represented the first time the Cook Islands hosted an evening international men's fixture under floodlights.

This followed key infrastructure investments supported by FIFA to stabilize pitch conditions and facilities in Matavera.
