London is forecast to enjoy a five-day stretch of warm, dry weather with temperatures hovering around 21C before a sharp cooldown arrives next week.

The Met Office and BBC Weather predict mostly clear skies and sunny intervals through the weekend, following an unusually mild September that averaged 2.6C above normal across the region.

BBC Weather meteorologist Chris Fawkes said on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the day would see "increasing spells of sunshine."

The dry run is expected to continue through Monday and Tuesday, keeping temperatures well above seasonal norms.

A cold front is then set to move in on Wednesday, bringing lower temperatures of 17C and subsequent rain.

High Pressure Keeps Southern UK Dry

The Met Office attributed the early autumn pattern to high pressure over the southern UK.

"The southern UK will likely be under the influence of high pressure for the first few days of this period.

This means plenty of dry weather to be had here, albeit with some chilly nights and overnight and morning fog in places," the Met Office said.

Longer-term projections indicate that winter could bring colder, wetter, and stormier conditions due to polar vortex activity and El Niño weather phenomena in the North Pole later this year.
