Iga Swiatek launches her 2026 Asian hard-court swing at the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing, where she faces local wildcard Xinyu Gao in the second round on Saturday, October 3.

The Polish star enters the tournament with a first-round bye in the Chinese capital.

Swiatek is stepping into a crucial stretch of the season as she pursues qualification for the WTA Finals, set for November 8 to 15.

Gao Earns Her Shot After Opening Win

Gao, ranked 244th in the world, reached the main draw through an organizers' wildcard.

The 28-year-old Chinese player booked her meeting with Swiatek by defeating Hungary's Panna Udvardy 6-2, 6-3 in 83 minutes in the opening round.

She holds a career-high ranking of 125th and has never appeared in a Grand Slam main draw, a sharp contrast to Swiatek's 31 major appearances.

Despite the ranking gap, Gao has produced notable upsets, including a three-set win over top-50 player Beatriz Haddad Maia at the start of 2025.

After the Beijing campaign at the National Tennis Center, Swiatek and fellow Polish player Maja Chwalinska have confirmed their participation in the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo.

That event begins October 26 and features a competitive field including Jelena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and home favorite Naomi Osaka.
