Virginia hosted Syracuse at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, October 10, 2026, for a nighttime Atlantic Coast Conference football matchup.

Both teams entered the game seeking greater consistency during the regular season.

The Cavaliers carried a strong defensive record against the pass and an impressive home run, while Syracuse faced questions about its quarterback situation and kicking game.

According to Virginia Athletics, Virginia held a 3-2 record entering the matchup, while Syracuse was listed at 2-2 in Syracuse.

com’s preview.

The game was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p. m.

Eastern Time and air on ACC Network.

Syracuse's Quarterback Uncertainty

Syracuse arrived after a 42-41 overtime victory over UConn, in which quarterback Amari Odom accounted for six touchdowns in his first start for the Orange.

Syracuse.

com reported that Odom threw for 335 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, while also running for a score.

However, a separate preview published by Yahoo Sports identified Malachi Nelson as Syracuse’s expected starter, describing him as the team's third-string quarterback amid injury concerns.

The differing quarterback assessments reflected uncertainty surrounding the Orange’s lineup ahead of the game.

Virginia’s defense faced a significant test against Syracuse’s passing attack.

Virginia Athletics reported that the Cavaliers allowed 140.8 passing yards per game, ranking first in the ACC and sixth nationally, while Syracuse averaged 285 passing yards per game, placing eighth in the conference.

The Cavaliers had also intercepted seven passes during the 2026 season, tied for the most in the ACC and sixth nationally.

According to Virginia Athletics, the defense had forced at least one turnover in 14 of its previous 16 games, recording 26 takeaways during that span, including 20 interceptions and six fumble recoveries.

Virginia’s ball security had been another strength.

The Cavaliers had committed only two turnovers, one interception and one lost fumble, tying for the fewest among ACC teams and the fourth-fewest nationally, according to the university’s preview.

The Cavaliers also entered the contest with four consecutive home victories dating to the previous season.

Virginia Athletics reported that the team had won nine of its last 10 home games and outscored opponents 135-14 across its first three home games in 2026.

The matchup marked the seventh meeting between the programs since their series began in 1975.

Each team had won three games, although Virginia had claimed three of the previous four meetings.

Syracuse was returning to Scott Stadium for the first time since 2015, when Virginia won 44-38 in triple overtime.

The schools had met only twice since Syracuse joined the ACC, playing in 2015 and again in 2022.

Saturday’s game also marked Virginia’s 101st Homecomings game, with the Cavaliers having won six of their previous seven contests in the annual series.

Syracuse coach Fran Brown was also evaluating changes beyond the quarterback position.

Syracuse.

com reported that Brown indicated further adjustments to the team's rotation were coming after the UConn game, raising the possibility of altered roles across the roster as the Orange sought more consistent performances.

Special teams remained another concern for Syracuse.

According to Syracuse.

com, the Orange had missed more field goals than any other team in the country, creating problems for an offense attempting to convert scoring opportunities and placing additional pressure on the team's game management.

Virginia, meanwhile, was seeking an improved offensive performance after its loss to Florida State on October 3.

The Cavaliers scored on their opening drive but failed to score again, while Florida State’s pass rush disrupted their offensive line, according to Yahoo Sports.

Virginia Athletics also highlighted the return of former Cavaliers wide receiver Herman Moore, who played for the program from 1988 to 1990.

Moore was scheduled to be recognized between the first and second quarters ahead of his induction into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in December 2026.
