Five family members of Harry Maguire have publicly criticized England manager Thomas Tuchel after the Manchester United defender was omitted from the 26-man World Cup squad.

The 33-year-old center-back, who has 67 caps for England, expressed his disappointment on social media before the official squad announcement for the tournament in North America this June and July.

Maguire was a regular starter under former manager Gareth Southgate, helping England reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final, though injury kept him out of Euro 2024.

Family Reactions

Maguire's mother, Zoe, initiated the public backlash with social media posts on Thursday night. She wrote, "You couldn't have done any more.

Hold your head high … Disgraceful."

In a subsequent statement, she added, "Absolute disgusted."

The defender's brothers, Joe and Laurence, also voiced their disagreement. Joe called it "the worst decision I’ve ever seen," while Laurence described the selection as a "shambles."

Maguire's wife, Fern, shared her devastation on Instagram, saying, "Beyond devastated for you. There was nothing else you could have possibly done to prove your worth."

His younger sister, Daisy, posted, "Crazy decision. Keep your head up."

Before the squad was confirmed, Maguire stated he was "confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had."

He added, "I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years."

Off the pitch, Maguire received a 15-month suspended sentence from a Greek court in March following a 2020 altercation on Mykonos.

A retrial found him guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery, though his legal team maintains his innocence and plans to appeal.
