Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska advanced to the second round of the French Open on Monday after Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng retired during their first-round match due to a foot injury.

Chwalinska, ranked 116th in the world, won the first set 6-4 and led 4-0 in the second when Zheng stopped playing.

Zheng, the world number 53, requested a medical timeout for a right foot problem before eventually retiring.

The 24-year-old Chwalinska made a successful Roland Garros main draw debut.

She previously reached the second round at Wimbledon in 2022 and played at the Australian Open in 2025.

In the first set, Chwalinska built a lead before Zheng fought back to tie at 4-4.

The Polish player then regained control by forcing unforced errors from her opponent.

The tournament draw, finalized on Friday, also schedules other Polish players for Monday action. World number one Iga Swiatek faces Emerson Jones, and Hubert Hurkacz meets Jaume Munar.
