Former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39 on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

The decision came due to a severe shoulder injury he suffered while visiting his former club's training ground.

The Danish international made the announcement at the Leicester City Performance Centre in Seagrave, where he was attending a charity match.

He stated that his body forced the decision to end his playing career.

"Sometimes the body makes the decisions that the heart can't read," Schmeichel said. "It's definitely not how I wanted it, my career's finished."

A Career Defined by Love for the Game

Schmeichel reflected on his journey and the passion that sustained him through challenges. "People talk about my drive.

I never saw it as drive. I saw it as love," he said.

"Because I love playing football. It is the best feeling in the world."

He visited the training facility for the first time since leaving Leicester City four years ago.

"It's very strange in some ways because it genuinely feels like yesterday," he added. "This club will always be special to me."

The historic 2015-16 Premier League championship squad reunited at the King Power Stadium for a charity fundraiser.

The event benefited the Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation and Leicester City in the Community.

Schmeichel recalled the team's unique bond and shared experiences of rejection. "Vards always jokes we were the best pub team in the world.
