Daihatsu has introduced minor model year upgrades for its popular kei van duo, the Hijet Cargo and the Atrai, following the example of the Hijet Truck.

The subtle yet meaningful improvements are focused on safety, allowing the light commercial vehicles to comply with Japanese regulations and remain competitive against the recently updated Suzuki Every and Every Wagon.

Enhanced Safety Suite

The highlight of the 2026 update is the enhanced Daihatsu Smart Assist active safety system.

The radar and camera can now detect bicycles crossing the road, monitor oncoming vehicles in the opposite lane when making right turns at intersections, and spot pedestrians crossing from the counter direction during turning maneuvers.

The exterior design of the Hijet Cargo and Atrai remains unchanged since the current generation debuted in 2021.

However, more variants of the Hijet Cargo now come standard with the LED Package, replacing the halogen units of cheaper models.

Powertrain and Pricing

Under the skin, the lineup continues to offer naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the mid-mounted 660cc engine, producing 46 hp and 63 hp respectively.

Depending on the trim, the engines are mated to a five-speed manual or a CVT, with power sent to the rear or all four wheels via an electronically-controlled 4WD system.

Prices start from ¥1,155,000 ($7,200) for the entry-level Hijet Cargo Special with RWD and a manual gearbox.

This is slightly more expensive than the recently updated Hijet Truck, which is priced from ¥1,094,500 ($6,900).

On the other end of the spectrum, the high-spec Atrai RS with turbo 4WD costs ¥2,013,000 ($12,600), while the Atrai Deck Van is even more expensive at ¥2,255,000 ($14,100).
