Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen retired from the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday after his RB22 stalled at the start line and suffered a complete engine failure on the opening lap.

Verstappen lined up in second place on the grid but failed to accelerate when the lights went out.

The field passed him before he abandoned the car in the garage.

Former Williams team manager Peter Windsor analyzed the incident on YouTube. He noted that the dramatic moment defined the outcome of the race immediately.

"This Grand Prix of Monaco was practically over after the start. That's because Max Verstappen stalled at the start," said Windsor.

Windsor expressed deep frustration over the sudden conclusion of the anticipated battle at the front of the grid.

He pointed to the sport's technical regulations as a primary factor in the mechanical difficulty.

"Max first shot forward a few meters and then the Red Bull stopped. I'm just going to say it.

Max was a victim of the 2026 regulations in Formula 1.

Yes, nobody else had the same starting problems as Red Bull and Max, but it's a complicated formula and it remains difficult to get these cars going," said Windsor.

While Windsor suspected the 2026 regulations caused the stoppage, Red Bull management clarified the true nature of the issue after the race.

Team principal Laurent Mekies apologized to the Dutch driver and confirmed that a broken Red Bull engine was responsible for the breakdown.
