The United States women's national team overcame a highly physical battle to secure a 1-0 friendly win over host country Brazil in Fortaleza.

Sophia Wilson played a pivotal role in the decisive moment of the match during the 63rd minute.

Her low strike took a deflection off Brazilian defender Isabela Chagas, misdirecting goalkeeper Lorena and finding the back of the net as an own goal.

The victory followed a 2-1 defeat for the American squad against the same Brazilian team in Sao Paulo on Saturday, a match where Wilson recorded her 25th international goal.

Tempers flared late in the game, resulting in Brazil finishing the match with only nine players on the pitch due to stoppage-time ejections.

Bia Zaneratto received her marching orders after picking up a second yellow card in the fourth minute of added time.

Referee Paola Cebollada Lopez then showed a straight red card to Tarciane in the ninth minute of stoppage time for elbowing Wilson.

The disciplinary actions extended beyond the pitch, as home side manager Arthur Elias and multiple coaching assistants were also dismissed from the technical area during the second half of play.

Lorena delivered a strong performance for the Selecao, who are set to host next year's Fifa Women's World Cup, by recording six saves.

Meanwhile, American goalkeeper Claudia Dickey secured her ninth international clean sheet without having to make a single save.

Brazil suffered an early blow when Dudinha had to leave the field on a stretcher just past the 30-minute mark following an apparent right leg injury.
