Hongqi, China's most prestigious homegrown automaker known for chauffeuring political elites including Chairman Mao, has unveiled the G919—a boxy off-roader that takes direct aim at the Mercedes G-Class.

The G919 made its debut at the recent Beijing Auto Show, and new images have now emerged showcasing its bold, polarizing design dominated by an enormous grille.

Measuring 202.1 inches long, 80.7 inches wide, and 76.7 inches tall on a 114.1-inch wheelbase, the G919 employs a traditional body-on-frame construction, essential for serious off-road capability.

Triple Lockers and Air Suspension

Hongqi has equipped the G919 with mechanical locking differentials at both the front and rear, plus a center diff lock—matching the G-Class's setup.

Air suspension further enhances its off-road prowess.

Under the hood, the G919 is an EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) that pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with four electric motors, one at each wheel.

The combined output is a staggering 831 hp and 973 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-62 mph sprint in just 4.5 seconds.

The battery pack size remains undisclosed, but the G919 reportedly offers an all-electric range of 174 miles and a combined range of 839 miles.
