Paralympic wheelchair tennis player Aniek van Koot has been appointed as an official ambassador for the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (WKZ) in Utrecht.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, alongside the launch of a dedicated sports program for children with disabilities.

The 35-year-old athlete returned to the hospital where she spent much of her childhood.

Van Koot underwent multiple surgeries on her right leg at the WKZ before the limb was eventually amputated.

Passion for Youth Sports

"I have a very big passion to get children to play sports," said Van Koot.

She recalled her positive memories of the hospital, including its rooftop playground and animal-themed wards.

"What a beautiful place, how nice it actually is here," she said. The appointment provides a platform for her to support children facing similar medical challenges.

Van Koot scheduled an afternoon presentation at the hospital to share her personal journey and offer motivation.

"The world is at your feet, but you have to learn to see that every now and then," she said.

After her amputation, Van Koot transitioned into wheelchair sports and built a highly successful career. She has won seven Paralympic medals in wheelchair tennis.

"When I was in the hospital a lot, I was not familiar with wheelchair sports," said Van Koot.

Her role focuses on the adaptive sports program at the WKZ, which helps children with disabilities or chronic illnesses find ways to exercise.

"If I could take away a piece of fear from just one person and give back a piece of confidence, then I will go to bed with a satisfied heart," she said.

Van Koot emphasized the value of peer counseling, recalling how speaking to a fellow amputee before her own operation gave her full confidence.

For her afternoon appearance, she prepared a special surprise for the children, which she chose to keep secret.
