Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton has died at age 25 while vacationing with her family in Koh Samui, Thailand, her family and sports officials confirmed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is providing consular assistance. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Stapleton, a Melbourne-based short-distance runner, recently placed third in the 2025 Powercor Women's Gift at the Stawell Gift.

Family and Partner Pay Tribute

Her brother, Joel Stapleton, described her as his best friend.

"She was always there for me and whenever I needed help she was always there," he said in a video tribute.

He recalled her bright presence: "Her smile was so bright that wherever she went you knew she was there."

Her partner, Tyler Gray, shared his grief on Instagram. "I can't put into words the hurt I am feeling," he wrote.

"You are the single greatest thing to happen to me."

A GoFundMe campaign raised over $100,000 within 24 hours before closing.

Joel Stapleton urged others to cherish loved ones: "You never know when the last time you get to do that is."

Sports Organizations Mourn

The Victorian Athletic League said Stapleton was "a valued member of our community whose presence, character and contribution left a lasting impact."

The Stawell Gift praised her performance as "a testament to her talent, dedication and passion for the sport of professional running."

Knox Little Athletics, where she began her career, noted her "dedication, competitive spirit and the joy she brought to the sport."

The Rowville Netball Club also expressed sympathy, calling the loss "simply unimaginable."
