Palmeiras midfielder Mauricio scored the first goal by a Brazilian club player in the 2026 World Cup during Paraguay's 3-1 loss to the United States in Group D on Friday.

The United States built a three-goal lead before Mauricio entered the match at halftime, replacing São Paulo player Bobadilla, who had earlier scored an own goal to open the scoring for the North American team.

In the 73rd minute, a full offensive play by Paraguay set up the scoring opportunity.

Mauricio entered the penalty box unmarked and drove a low, left-footed shot past the goalkeeper.

This goal marks the first time a Palmeiras athlete has scored in a World Cup since Chilean player Valdívia did so during the 2014 tournament.

National team manager Gustavo Alfaro selected Mauricio for the squad after FIFA approved his sports nationality switch, recognizing his eligibility through his Paraguayan-born father.

Despite starting the tournament with a loss, the midfielder expressed optimism by comparing to previous tournament winners who overcame initial setbacks.

"In the last World Cup, Argentina also lost the first game. We need unity and we have many games ahead," said Mauricio.
