Major League Baseball issued a warning to players this week against defacing uniforms following an open defiance of a Pride Night event by multiple San Francisco Giants players at Oracle Park on Friday, June 12, 2026.

During the annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, losing pitcher Landen Roupp and relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker inscribed the Bible verse "Gen 9:12-16" onto their team caps, which displayed the "SF" logo in rainbow colors.

Reliever Sam Hentges also participated by refusing to wear the rainbow-themed cap entirely.

League Clarifies Policy Enforcement

League officials clarified that the notification was a standard enforcement of league-wide apparel policies rather than a targeted response to the religious or social nature of the players' messages.

"To be clear, this routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message.

We respect players’ right to free expression," an MLB statement said.

The league emphasized that its uniform code explicitly bans all forms of personal messaging on official apparel and equipment, regardless of the text written by the athletes.

"However, writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League Baseball’s Uniform Regulations which provides in part that, ‘[a] Player may not write, attach, affix, embroider or otherwise display nicknames or messages on apparel or playing equipment,’" the statement said.

According to league officials, the timing of the reminder was incidental and not exclusively tied to the events that took place during the Giants' celebration.
