The PGA Tour has announced it will exempt Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy from the mandatory 15-event minimum requirement for the 2026 season.

This decision allows him to retain his membership card for 2027 without facing a one-year suspension.

McIlroy has played only nine PGA Tour events through June 2026 after skipping several signature events, including the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.

He has focused instead on major championships and links golf in Europe.

According to a report by Bob Harig of The Daily Drive, a clause in the PGA Tour player handbook grants the commissioner discretionary power to reduce the tournament threshold for international members facing medical issues or extraordinary circumstances.

The four-time major champion previously withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a back injury earlier this year.

He also arrived late for The Players Championship in March.

McIlroy is scheduled to reach 13 total events this season by competing in the Genesis Scottish Open and the three FedEx Cup playoff tournaments.

He will miss the 3M Open and Wyndham Championship.

Commissioner's Discretionary Power

The PGA Tour handbook outlines specific conditions under which the commissioner can grant a waiver to international players who fail to meet the mandatory playing threshold.

"Notwithstanding the above, the Commissioner, upon application by a foreign member and for medical reasons or other extraordinary circumstances that the Commissioner, at his discretion, determines to be a valid reason for not playing in at least 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments, may reduce the 15-minimum tournament requirement," the handbook states.
