Shane Lowry carded a bogey-free, six-under-par 64 in the third round of the Travelers Championship on Saturday, climbing into a tie for fifth place at 13-under par.

The Irish golfer now sits just behind leader Scottie Scheffler and second-place Viktor Hovland heading into the final round in Connecticut.

Lowry's turnaround follows a recent split from caddie Darren Reynolds and the immediate rehiring of his former long-term caddie, Dermot Byrne.

Change on the Bag

Lowry explained that the decision to part ways with Reynolds was amicable after three and a half years together.

He said the slow pace of recent tournament rounds influenced his desire for a fresh dynamic on the course.

Byrne, who caddied for James Nicholas at the US Open the previous week, was available to step in due to the proximity of the event to his home.

Lowry noted that the familiarity with Byrne has already provided a noticeable mental boost and confidence.

“It’s just nice to have an old friend on the bag, and hopefully we can go out here tomorrow and give it a run,” he said.

Seeking a Kickstart

Lowry had struggled with mediocre results prior to the tournament, including a missed cut at the US Open.

He acknowledged that his recent performances have been disappointing, making this event a crucial turning point for his season.

“I just need maybe that one good week to kind of give myself a kickstart for the rest of the year, and hopefully it's out there tomorrow,” Lowry said.
