Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has predicted that the club will make a move for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni this summer.

Ferdinand's forecast comes after United missed out on West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, who is reportedly heading to Tottenham Hotspur.

United refused to meet West Ham's valuation for the 21-year-old Fernandes, allowing Spurs to strike a deal.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand expressed surprise at the rising transfer fees.

"I've woken up to the news that Fernandes from West Ham could be going to Spurs, £80 million, huge money, it's thrown me," Ferdinand said.

He noted that both Manchester United and Arsenal are keeping a tight grip on their finances this window.

"I think Manchester United and Arsenal have made it very clear, they have a stance in this window, they're not going to overpay for people who they don't feel they should," Ferdinand added.

Ferdinand believes United are holding back their funds for a major target in Spain.

"I think Man United are holding back their money for one man, and that's Tchouameni," he stated.

Reports suggest Real Madrid may consider selling the 26-year-old Frenchman, whom they signed from Monaco for £85 million four years ago.

Ferdinand emphasized that United must act decisively if Tchouameni becomes available.

"If he becomes available in this market, Man United are not going to miss, they can't afford to miss that one," Ferdinand said.

He added that United is willing to let other potential signings go if the price isn't right.
