Veteran forward and future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane is expected to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2026, after three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

Multiple reports indicate Kane remains open to returning to Detroit, but it is unclear whether Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman wants to retain the 37-year-old winger.

The Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs have emerged as the primary suitors for the three-time Stanley Cup champion.

Toronto an Intriguing Option

The Maple Leafs could offer Kane a chance to mentor newly drafted forward Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

McKenna openly discussed his admiration for Kane during his media introduction at the Ford Performance Centre.

"I didn't get too many wild ones, but Patrick Kane texted me. He's my idol, so that was cool," McKenna said.

McKenna added: "He's who I grew up watching.

I don't know if it was all the YouTube highlights that made me play like him, but he's someone I've always watched, just how creative he is and how smart he is."

According to PuckPedia, Toronto has $20.9 million in salary cap space and could use Kane to bolster their top-six forward group.

However, TSN's Chris Johnston reported that a definitive fit between Toronto and Kane remains unlikely at this stage.
