Watson was taken into custody after engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience, calling on Congress to impeach and convict President Donald Trump.

The protest was part of a news conference organized by the Removal Coalition, a grassroots activist group.

Participants included founder Jessica Denson, Congressman Al Green of Texas, constitutional scholar Bruce Fein, and members of About Face Veterans and Defenders of Our Republic.

Call for Impeachment

Before his arrest, Watson urged all members of Congress to support articles of impeachment alongside Representative Green.

He also encouraged Americans to continue peaceful demonstrations until lawmakers fulfill their constitutional duties.

“Major Watson demonstrated today the kind of courage our democracy demands,” said John Bonifaz, President and Co-Founder of Free Speech For People.

“He honored the same oath that every Member of Congress has taken—to support and defend the Constitution.”

Bonifaz contrasted Watson’s willingness to risk his freedom with what he described as inaction by those who ignore President Trump’s alleged abuses of power.

He stated that Congress has both the authority and obligation to impeach and remove Trump.

Free Speech For People launched its impeachment campaign on Inauguration Day and has gathered over 1.1 million petition signatures.

The group has documented hundreds of alleged impeachable offenses across 27 grounds, including corruption, First Amendment violations, and usurpation of authority.

“This is an existential moment for our nation and our democracy,” Bonifaz added.
