The Calgary Flames acquired defenceman Jake Middleton and three draft picks from the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, July 2, 2026, in exchange for forwards Blake Coleman and Olli Maatta.
Calgary received a second-, third-, and fourth-round draft choice alongside the 219-pound, 30-year-old left-shot defenceman to add size and physical protection to their developing roster.

The trade addresses a depth concern for the Flames following the departure of Ryan Lomberg, leaving the younger lineup short on physical enforcement.
Conroy on Middleton's Role
Flames General Manager Craig Conroy emphasized that Middleton brings a respected presence to the ice that goes beyond fighting.
"People respect him," said Conroy. "He doesn't fight much because he doesn't have to.
He's a good player, but if something arises, he will come to his teammates' rescue. He will make our other players feel better in the games."
Conroy noted that the move is an intentional piece of roster construction rather than outdated hockey mentality.
"I mean, a second, third and fourth, those could be players, those could be picks - you just don't know the bottom line," Conroy said.
The general manager explained that the extra assets give the rebuilding organization more moving options in the future.
"It definitely gives them a path to being a bigger part of this team, because Blake was such a big part of it," said Conroy.
"Now those minutes are going to be available, and guys need to step up and have great summers and come in and win that spot and those minutes."
