British Columbia nurses are now in a legal strike position after a 72-hour notice expired on Thursday, July 2, 2026, potentially disrupting healthcare services across the province.

The British Columbia Nurses' Union issued the notice after members voted down a tentative contract agreement last month.

Wage Dispute at the Core

Disagreements over a general wage increase remain the primary obstacle between the union and the provincial health employer.

The job action is expected to involve nurses restricting overtime and abandoning non-nursing duties such as cleaning, processing administrative orders, and answering phones.

Because nursing is designated as an essential service, British Columbia regulations require hospitals and clinics to maintain minimum staffing to ensure patient safety.
