The victory sets up a round of 16 match for Switzerland next Tuesday in Vancouver.

They will face the winner of Friday's match between Colombia and Ghana in Kansas City, Missouri.

This win marks a significant milestone for Switzerland, which has not won a knockout-round match since 1938 in France.

Although they reached the round of 16 in the past three World Cups, they failed to advance further.

Algeria was eliminated from the tournament following their first World Cup appearance since 2014.

During that previous run, the Algerian squad reached the knockout stage before losing to Germany.

Match Highlights

Algeria controlled the opening 10 minutes of the match before Johan Manzambi assisted Embolo for a tap-in goal.

Ndoye then extended the Swiss lead early in the second half with a powerful shot past the goalkeeper.

Switzerland nearly added a third goal in the 81st minute when Fabian Rieder narrowly missed a tap-in.

The tournament breakout star, 20-year-old Manzambi, earned his second consecutive start after contributing two goals and two assists.

Algeria had previously advanced to the knockout stage as a third-place finisher following a 3-3 draw against Austria.

That result eliminated Iran and saw 35-year-old Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez score twice.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the match in Vancouver, marking his second game of the day.

He previously watched the matchup between Spain and Austria in Inglewood, California.

The Swiss team previously earned their spot in Vancouver by defeating Canada 2-1 on Wednesday.
