California Governor Gavin Newsom's administration launched a defensive social media response on Friday, July 3, 2026, following reports that Democratic operative Alexis Podesta wore a wire for the FBI in a corruption probe that ensnared the governor's former chief of staff.

According to reports from the California Post and the Sacramento Bee, Podesta cooperated with federal authorities by secretly recording conversations with various political figures in Sacramento.

The investigation led to former chief of staff Dana Williamson pleading guilty in May to federal fraud and tax charges related to an embezzlement scheme involving a dormant campaign account belonging to former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

Legal representatives involved in the case confirmed the surveillance operations that took place during the federal public corruption investigation.

"Alexis wore a wire, and Dana did not," said McGregor Scott, attorney for former chief of staff Dana Williamson.

The federal investigation has expanded to examine the tax filings of the governor's wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and the operations of her gender-equity media non-profit organization.

The governor and his wife have criticized the expanding probe, characterizing the actions as politically motivated maneuvers directed by federal opponents.

"There are clearly no boundaries to what Donald Trump will do to get his way or to challenge those who get in his way," said Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of the California Governor.

The governor's spouse emphasized that their administration would continue to oppose the ongoing federal pressure despite the widening scope of the corruption inquiry.
