The England national football team is set to face co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca during the 2026 World Cup, confronting a formidable home record.

According to an analysis by the Independent, Mexico has recorded 70 victories, 17 draws, and just two defeats in 89 competitive matches at the high-altitude Mexico City venue.

This record starkly contrasts with England's recent struggles, having suffered three home defeats at Wembley Stadium within the last six years.

Unbeaten at the Azteca in World Cups

El Tri has never lost a World Cup match at the Azteca, securing nine wins and two draws across tournaments in 1970, 1986, and 2026.

During the current summer tournament, Mexico secured victories against South Africa, the Czech Republic, and Ecuador at the venue, marking their first World Cup knockout stage win since 1986.

Mexico's last competitive defeat at the Azteca occurred in 2013, when Honduras won 2-1 during qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.

Since that loss, El Tri has remained unbeaten in 26 subsequent home matches, though most victories came against lower-ranked opposition, with Canada being the highest-ranked opponent at 30th.

Aside from a draw against Portugal, England will be the highest-ranked competitive visitor to the Azteca since Brazil played there in the 2003 Gold Cup.

The Three Lions have a brief history at the venue, having played two matches during the 1986 World Cup: a 3-0 victory over Paraguay and a quarter-final elimination by Argentina.
